Koenigsegg Regera: The First Fully Robotized Car is a Luxury Car without Transmission

Luxury cars are well-known to be toys for the big boys. Luxury vehicle is a marketing term for a vehicle that provides luxury, pleasant or desirable features beyond strict necessity at increased expense. Cars that fall under this category are believed to be of greater quality, precision, construction, comfort and performance. Yes they may come at a hefty price but they will certainly give you the highest form of satisfaction.

One brand of luxury cars debuted about two years ago and its hybrid feature is a shocker. Koenigsegg Automotive AB is a Swedish manufacturer of high-performance sports cars, based in Ängelholm, Skåne County, Sweden. During the Geneva Motor Show in 2015, Koenigsegg unveiled their limited production hybrid sports car, the Koenigsegg Regera. A swedish verb which means “to reign” or “to rule”, the Koenigsegg Regera is said to be the most powerful and fastest accelerating car ever. With only 80 units built, 40 have already been sold as of March 2016; about 50% sold out in a year, considering it w
as just released in 2015. Each Koenigsegg Regera costs $1.9 million US dollars.

That’s one expensive car! It combines a powerful twin-turbo combustion engine. It has three electric motors that house the Koenigsegg Direct drive, a cutting edge battery power via new power train technology. This replaces the gearbox which reduces the car’s weight. Surprisingly, the car also has no transmission. Yes, you heard it right. No gears, no continuous variable timing, no nothing. So how in the world can a $1.9 million car move? Jason Fenske, in charge of the overall engineering of the Koenigsegg Regera, explains the power of “direct drive”. A hydraulic coupling links the 5.0-liter V-8 engine to the 2.73:1 final drive, and once the Regera climbs above 30 mph, the system operates most efficiently. Until then, the electric drive system handles propulsion.

To achieve movement, the Koenigsegg Regera needs 2,368 pounds worth of force to turn the tires at 160 mph. That will supply 601 pounds or aero and rolling resistance so the three electric motors that the Koenigsegg Regera carries can supply another 900 pounds, enough to provide power. The interior will not fall short from its performance. There is added insulation in the interior reducing cabin noise caused by wind and power train noises. It also has 8-way electrically adjustable memory foam seats. That’s not all.
The car also houses an entertainment system, a complete camera system with recording capabilities (front, inner, and rear), Apple CarPlay, a new sound system, ambient lighting, and 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity. It also features front and rear parking sensors. Being at par with the whole idea of luxury, Koenigsegg claims that the Regera is the first fully robotized car. Hydraulic pumps and accumulators control the active front and rear wings, as well as active chassis control and lifting to achieve a smooth run. This is like cloud on wheels!
